Introduction to the Sport of Rugby
Because it is an exciting game, many people at present increasingly love the game. Rugby combines football and soccer in that it is a hard-hitting physical game like football, and a game of speed and movement, like soccer.
Rugby balls are quite similar to a football in size and shape. However, rugby balls are larger than a football. Today you cannot find laces on rugby balls anymore. It is mandatory to wear a mouthpiece in a rugby game, but it is optional to wear a soft-padded head gear.
The ‘pitch’ is the playing field of the rugby game. The measurement of this large grassy surface is 100 meters long and 70 meters wide. Uprights are positioned on every end of the ruby field. The uprights are before the goals area of the team. The minimum depth of the goal area is 10 meters but it is often 22 meters.
Rugby is played by two teams which will be represented on the pitch. Each team fields in fifteen players for the game. Each team is divided into two separate groupings called the pack and the backs. The jersey number of pack players are from one to eight. They consist of the larger, more physical players. The fastest players in the team make up the backs and their jersey numbers are from nine to fifteen.
The objective of the game is to score goals which are known as “try.” To score a try, a player need to bring the ball down inside your opponent’s end zone and touch the ball down. There is no particular player that can carry the ball to the zone to make a score. If you make a try, 5 points is awarded to you. When a player makes a try, he is then awarded a conversion kick. This allows him to add 2 more points to the score if he is successful.
Another way of scoring is through a drop goal. Your team gets three points through a drop goal. This happens when a player kicks the ball through the uprights of the opposing team. The drop goals will be counted only when the ball makes contact with the ground before it is kicked.
Penalty kicks are also granted on player fouls. A penalty kick is worth three points if it is a good one. A penalty kick is taken where the foul was committed behind the 22 meter line.
At present, there are many professional levels of rugby. Cities have their own rugby teams, similar to pro football teams in different states. Rugby also has international levels which is the most popular of all the games. International teams are made up of the best players in the city teams in different countries. Today, international rugby games are getting more popular.
